Game report
The more experienced Australian squad outplayed Thailand, and were never in danger of not securing a needed win. It was a case of bumping up the goals with four in the first half, and a less inspired second half produced only one more. The diminuitive but lively Thais had little to counter their domineering opponent, but never gave up the fight, coming more into the game in the second half when they were able to push into attack on the odd occasion.
Post game quote Australian Head Coach Adrian Santrac
I am happy with the win but we should have converted more opportunities. Sometimes we were quite wasteful which is still a concern to us. We are still taking wrong options and finishing poorly. We are in with an opportunity to make the quarterfinals but we would have liked more coming into it.
The third game in a short space of time for this group, the players did tire. Germany and Canada also faded in the second half. We made substitutions to freshen up and spark the attack going forward but you have to be mindful that the conditions here are difficult. We still had numerous opportunities but didn't capitalise.
Obviously we now have to wait for the results on Thursday. We will be watching the US-Spain match closely, but also Korea mathematically have a chance to qualify. We shall have a recovery session tomorrow morning and the rest of the day away from football to recharge our batteries. Then we will be back to the grindstone with a session the next morning. We are hoping US will beat Spain, and that Korea does not record a win, which I think would be unlikely. Hopefully it will go that way, and we will be prepared. We will not be wasting any time getting ready for a quarterfinal.
