La Gazzetta pays homage to Michelle Akers
Mario Rimati

Massimo Lopes Pegna, the American correspondent for Italy's "La Gazzetta dello Sport" (the world's oldest sports paper), came out with a touching homage on Aug. 30th in his "American Dream" column to Michelle Akers and her "adieu" to the U.S. national team. The article was rather touching and spoke highly of Akers' long and
illustrious career with the WNT. In one description Lopes Pegna stated that "On the field she does what the men do. But that shouldn't be an offence. A similarity with Falcao (former Brazilian ace)? That's a comparison that should please such a great player as Akers". The article also had a bit of Italy in it as Lopes Pegna mentioned that Akers' first-ever national team match was in the Italian town of Jesolo in 1985. Indeed a great article for a great player.
